Beast of burden
Always look on the bright side of life …..
So always look on the bright side of death!
Just before you draw your terminal breath.
Life’s a piece of shit,
When you look at it.
Life’s a laugh and death’s a joke, it’s true,
You’ll see it’s all a show,
Keep ’em laughing as you go.
Just remember that the last laugh is on you!
(Monty Python movie: Life of Brian)
It was a simple plan: Surrender. Free hostages. Escape.
But things weren’t going to plan.
That Parthian general .. did things his own way. Captive soldiers were reduced to slaves. Slave of the empire .. Maciste’s new place in life.
Parthian soldiers .. had it in for him. He’d got under their skin. Didn’t like a captive standing up for himself. Going to be on his back all the journey back-home. Breathing down his neck.
Beast of burden .. replacing an ox. Slave of the empire worked into the dirt .. hauling a cart back to the emperor. Minders sweating his knobs off .. under the heat .. no let-up .. on his back every waking minute of the day. No escape.
And then rashly … Menander turns up. Closing down every option Maciste had. Slave of the empire. Beast of burden. Taken back .. to face the empire’s savage end to his life.
Who’s not up for giving Maciste a break.
The right moment to call time-out? Give the fella a chance? For a breather?
Gather strength for his manly spirit to battle against these challenges.
Book Three – Road to Hell – will pick up the thread. Later.
Meantime ….. a turn in another direction …..
